Purpose of Education
Education has always been a large issue in the world, possibly for centuries. Even the early educators such as, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle had trouble with their ideas because they were very controversial in their times. Many of their techniques were the stepping stones that have influenced the education process of today.
In the United States, education has always been an important goal of the entire country. The Common School Movement helped set the basic ideas of the education process, in the United States. I agree with many of the ideas that came from this movement. Everyone deserves to be educated because they will use the knowledge to survive in society. Also, the need to be educated in this world is rising, due to the advances in technology. Everyone will benefit from an educated public. This is true because, without an education the leaders of this country would not understand the past of the country, nor know what decisions to make to create a better world to live in for future generations.
Curriculum
An education is necessary to survive in society today. With all the advances in technology, you need to know a lot more than you did 20 years ago. I believe that everyone should have basic math skills because it will help them maintain their budgets, and function in the currency exchange of our country. Technology is a very important part of education, because the world is now run by computers and other technology. In technology, basic skills are learned, relearned and replaced on a regular basis. History is important to understand and know because if you don’t have information from the past, then you will not be able to understand the future decisions of our government. Everyone needs to have a basic knowledge of the world around them, in order, to survive in the crazy mixed up society we live in.
Instructional Strategies
I have the desire to teach younger children everything that I can. Mostly, I want to be able to help them prepare for the many things they will have to accomplish in their lives. Math, Reading and Writing are the subjects I am most excited about. Children learn at different paces and creating exciting lessons for them will help each one of them retain the information better.
My current philosophy of education is essentialism. I think this is so, because I plan on teaching children that are of the age that they need to learn the basics. Math facts are easily learned by doing drills over and over to help the information sink in. Playing games will help each child learn the information in their own way, and also allow the teacher to help the ones that are struggling. Basic knowledge is needed as a foundation to create lifelong experiences. Reading needs a lot of group work to help understand how to pronounce the words properly. The same can be said for Science, groups can help the children learn from one another and create great memories that will help the children recall the information easier. I know my philosophy can, and probably will change but for now I am sticking to essentialism, because basic, core knowledge is important.
Assessment
Assessments are necessary, but can create problems for the children that “freeze up.” We need to assess because we need to know if the students understand the things that we are teaching them, also, in current years, to see if the teachers are teaching the proper things, and if their approaches are working. Teachers should use assessments that can be written or taken on a computer. These will help the teachers know how well the students are doing; also, using homework assignments as assessments will help to be sure the students that have hard times on tests understand the information. If a student does well on the assignments, but freezes on the tests, and scores low they are not, necessarily, in need of extra help. They might just need to have computer assessments because it will seem like they are not taking a test at all. A variety of activates will help assess each student on their individual level. This will help the teachers know who needs extra help and who doesn’t.
Summary
Education is an important part of life in our society. Keeping up with all the advances in technology can be difficult, but with the proper basic knowledge everyone can do it. Teaching children can be very rewarding. For me, teaching children is not just a job it is a life style. As a teacher I will be shaping the future of our country. I could teach a future president of the United States. Working with children brings joy to my life, you can never predict what they are going to do and can always count on them for a good laugh.
Learning from others is something that I do very well and I hope to teach children that learning from others is a great way to learn. Getting an education is essential for everyone, for them to improve as individuals; even teachers need to continue to learn to better their teaching skills, in this ever changing society. Education provides each person with the skills that they need to live in our crazy world. Children are our future we need to give them a fighting chance. That is what education does.
