Reflection
My eportfolio contains multiple items, which show my growth and experiences during my time in the education program at Dixie State University. Based on Dixie State University Department of Education DESERT model standard, these experiences provide evidence of meeting the claim of becoming a competent, caring and qualified educator. These experiences have been documented in my eportfolio by benchmark assessments and appendix items.
I believe I am a competent educator as demonstrated by this health lesson plan I created in my ELED 3900 class. It shows I am able to make accommodations in my lesson planning, to meet the needs of my diverse students (DM1) and to use technology to motivate and engage my students in learning (DM2). This lesson plan identifies the classroom contextual factors, which show I had two ELL students, one gifted student, and seven low level readers in my class. I made modifications in my lesson plan in instruction, language development, assignments, grouping configurations, and activities to meet their needs. I used SIOP strategies that included vocabulary in the content, multiple opportunities for interaction, use of supplementary materials and meaningful activities that supported all learners. The assessment showed that my ELL learners, and low level readers met the lesson objectives, which provides evidence my accommodations were successful. I accommodated for my gifted learner by extending my questions to higher levels of thinking and asking my student to retell the function of the nutrient groups in their own words.
In addition to evidence of making accommodations in planning for diverse students’ needs, my lesson plan demonstrates my ability to support my teaching through the use of technology. I used the promethean board, to show the vocabulary words, various examples of the foods you find the nutrients in and an activity for the students to practice their knowledge of the functions of the nutrient groups and their use of technology.
I believe I am a caring educator as demonstrated by my classroom management plan, which I created in my ELED 3250 class. It shows I am able to create a caring and safe environment for my students (DM4). This classroom management plan identifies my classroom policies and procedures, a letter to the parents (DM6), a letter to the students and my management philosophy. The letter to the parents tells a little about me, what the students will be learning, and a little about my classroom procedures. With this plan I can create a physically and emotionally safe classroom for my students every year. A classroom needs love and discipline to run smoothly and with this classroom management plan in place the students will be in a safe and caring environment, where they will learn new concepts and gain the knowledge they need.
I feel I am a qualified educator as demonstrated by this science lesson with technology, on the day and night cycle, which I created in my ELED 4300 class. It demonstrates I am confident in my subject matter and my use of instructional strategies to engage students in inquiry thinking (DM3). This lesson includes a prezi show and includes extensive research about the day and night cycle. In this lesson I used multiple high level thinking questions and expand the students thinking and content knowledge, by doing so I expanded my content knowledge when planning the questions for the students. This lesson contains instructional strategies that engage the students interests, these strategies include, cooperative learning, conducting an investigation and expanding content knowledge through inquiry thinking.
In conclusion, my experiences during the education program at Dixie State University are documented in my eportfolio, which show my growth during my participation in the education program through benchmark assessments. The health lesson plan shows I am a competent educator because I am able to make accommodations in my lesson planning, to meet the needs of my diverse students. My classroom management plan shows I am a caring educator because I am able to create a safe and caring environment for my students. Finally, the science lesson with technology shows I am a qualified educator because it shows I am able to use instructional strategies to engage students in inquiry thinking. Each benchmark assessment gives evidence of the Dixie State University DESERT model standards and each one provides excellent evidence that meet the claim that I am a competent, caring and qualified educator.
