Why it is Important?
Teachers can relay important information over the class website. Class Websites and blogs can be multi-faceted and serve several purposes. Teachers can post a calendar of events, helpful tips, school and teacher information, fun and games, and so forth. As long as the website is kept current and the teacher encourages activity on the site, it is an effective tool. This creates a two-way communication between parents, teacher, and students by responding and commenting on the class website.
Possible Barriers
Not every parent or student has access to the class website, because not all families have access to the internet. Families can feel alienated or inferior if they do not have access to the internet. For those students, whose parents cannot check the website frequently to retrieve the information, allow time either in the morning or afternoon before or after school. Also parents may not want photos of their student on the website or blog. Sending a permission slip home, requesting to permission to put pictures on the page can overcome this barrier.
